Prep and protect the hair with Joico Defy Damage ProSeries 1. Shake the can vigorously then spray in short bursts onto 2-inch sections of hair in a downward motion. Comb the hair for even distribution.
Start by sectioning the hair down the middle to the nape. Take a section from the point of the crown to the top of the ears.
Place the two back sections in chop sticks for ease of partings and a fun look. Section the fringe out. Place the front two sections in chop sticks for a total of 5 sections.
Starting in the fringe, split the triangle in half. Take a diagonal back zig zag section, slice off the zig zag and apply formula 1 feathering at the base.
Continue this same method until the section is done.
Repeat on the other side
Working in the side front quadrant; take a large zig zag parting that is diagonally forward. Take a slice parting off the zig zag; tease the base and apply Formula 1 shifting your developer up 5 Volume. The thickness of your sections will determine the amount of contrast created.
Continue working up the side section. With each new parting, your zig zags will increase to create more contrast.
Once the side is completed, repeat on the other side. Shift your developer up 5 Volume. As you work up towards the top of the head, tease less. This will create a higher contrast finish. Braid the left-out hair for control and a cool processing look that creates interest in the salon.
Working in the back quadrant off a diagonal forward parting at the hair line, take a large zig zag, slice the zig-zag, tease the base more towards the center back and apply Formula 1. Shift your developer up 5 Volume.
Continue working in the same method up the back quadrant. Your zig-zags should increase as you work up towards the top with your teasing becoming less and less. Make sure to feather your formula at the base to create a seamless blend. Repeat on the other side shifting your developer up one last time 5 Volume.
Apply formula 2 in a tear drop formation that is shallow towards the front and gets deeper in the interior. Working off diagonal back sections will maintain client comfort and ease of application.
Create contrast and dimension with formulas 3 and 4 in a High-Low method. Take large diagonal back sections. Apply Formula 3 to one section, take an additional large diagonal back section and apply Formula 4. Repeat this throughout the entire head.
Process for 10-20 minutes. Shampoo with Defy Damage Protective Shampoo. Apply Defy Damage ProSeries 2 throughout the entire head and process for 5 minutes. Rinse and style as desired with your favorite Joico products.
