Call it a fringe, call it bangs…but whatever you do, don’t call it a mistake; because this unique frame for the face is one of Jill’s preferred ways to add interest to a haircut. The key? Every single bang design is different and requires its own, unique styling approach. Jill takes you through the step-by-steps of her 4 favs, here:

“Because it needs to be trimmed frequently, a blunt fringe is good for someone who enjoys styling their hair and doesn’t mind bang maintenance,” explains Jill of this heavy, straight-as-an-arrow look that requires movement and lift at the crown, plus texture on the ends.

HERE’S HOW

  • Begin with Joico Dream Blowout Thermal Protection Créme on damp hair.
When blow-drying, direct everything forward and inward to keep the straight line of the fringe.
  • Divide your bangs into 2 sections and clip back the top layer. Working on the bottom section of the hair, straighten the hair from the base, and slightly bend the hair bringing it down from the root.
  • Unclip the top section of the bangs. Working about halfway down the bangs, straighten them down with a flat iron, leaving the root area of the top layer alone.
  • Finish styling rest of the hair.
  • Finish hair off with Joico Beach Shake Texturizing Finisher to add body and interest to the hair. Spray a little of the product right at the crown to give the bangs extra lift.

“Curly girls don’t want to wash their hair every day…so on alternate days, I like to spritz the front with water, use a diffuser to dry the bangs, and add texturizing spray to take away frizz,” says Jill.

HERE’S HOW:

“This sexy look can feel a little overwhelming, because it’s comprised of intentionally heavy layers and needs to have motion coming from the top,” says Jill.

Here’s how:

  • On the front center section, use a curling iron with a 1 ¼ -1 ½ inch barrel and curl the bangs downward, towards the face.
  • On the sides, use the same curling iron, curling the hair away from the face, creating a feathered effect.
  • Finish with Joico Beach Shake Texturizing Finisher to keep the bangs to each side and out of the eyes.

“Perfect for those who want bangs without a big commitment – these are cut only to the chin or cheekbones,” explains Jill, of this “no-fear” style.

Here’s how:

  • Start by taking the front of hair across your parting, and the entire section (about the width of your bush) through the crown.
  • Using a round brush, blow-dry the hair, overdirecting it forward…straight ahead… and then up and away.
  • Use the heat setting of your blow-dryer to create the form and style; finish and lock in the look with the cool setting of your blow dryer.
  • For a final flourish, use a foam roller and roll the curl away from the face, clipping the roller to set. Allow it to cool, then remove roller and lightly blow-dry to finish.
  • Apply a lightweight hair spray for hold and shine, like Joico FlipTurn Volumizing Finishing Spray.
